Soma creates space to :
(i am using the re prefix for these words because i believe that our bodies reember how to do all this and these process may be forgotten or feel new but are inate to us. this work is a returning to the body/mind/spirit)
revive a sense of vitality and energy
restore body wide communication
reeducate movement to be efficient for your body in gravity
reawaken parts of your body mind that may be “offline"
reshape your relationship with chronic pain
regenerate presence
rekindle joy and ease of movement
return to center
My teachers like to say that the biggest contraindication for Soma is the resistance to change
What is Soma Structural Integration?
-
Soma was formed in 1977 as an off shoot of Rolfing Structural Integration. All structural Integration emerged from the work of Ida P Rolf. Soma is known for the focus on body mind integration with the tools of drawing, reflective journaling, and specific assesment models. These have emerged from previous Soma Institute owners, Bill Williams (1977-1986) and Karen Bolesky and Marcia Ward (1986-2018) pyschology experience and interest in the body, mind, spirit. Now the Soma Institute is on Whidbey Island and run by Karens newphew Jesse Guerro and his partner Kelsi Giswold!
While Rolfing is a fairly new modality it is influenced by Osteopathy, homeopathy, chiropractic and yoga. Its important for me to contextualize this modality. For instance, osteopathy was highly informed by time spent with the Indigenous peoples of the Shawnee Tribe. The process of this I can assume had elements that were extractive and de- contexualized. Further more, osteopathy is rooted in ancient traditions around the world known by many names. There is much more here I want to learn about to be integrity with this work.

SOMA 11 Series
The Soma 11 series provides long lasting benefits through a sequential series that works to incrementally rebalance the whole bodywide fascial network. Ideally sessions are scheduled 1-2 weeks apart so there is time to integrate as well as continuity and a container for this transformative series.
The series can be broken into three distinct segments:
Session 1-3 create the “sleeve sessions" where we work together to release the fascia surrounding the outer muscle groups while tending to the balance of your existing structure. We work with the breath, ribcage, feet legs and side body!
Sessions 4-7 are the core sessions where we focous on enlivening educating and bringing awareness to center of our bodies. We work with the fascia that surrounds the spine, legs, pelvis and more!
Sessions 8-11 are integrative sessions, after doing all this release work, we work to connect and integrate our body parts together through movement. This is where the long lasting effects happen, when our bodies move in new ways and slowly unlearn the patterns that we are ready to compost.
